Finally got sick of just having my mattress on the floor, so I decided to hunt down a bed today. Spent most of the afternoon driving to exotic locations like Ikea and Freedom Furniture to be thoroughly disappointed by the designs and prices. Got home at 5 and in despair spent quite a few minutes Googleing without much luck, until finally I at last found a decent looking bed at a place called Furniture Galore - and even better, they were open until 9! Arriving at the store confirmed that the bed was indeed good, the only problem being they were out of stock, so I have to wait til mid-April to get one :(

Still it's nice to have things sorted out - here's a pic of the bed I ended up choosing:

Furniture Galore seems to have some pretty good stuff at great prices, and their delivery is really cheap too (only $22 for my bed, wow!). Worth knowing about, since I've been growing increasingly disillusioned with Ikea of late. Which places do you all prefer when shopping for furniture?

Feeling hot and bored, so I checked out LJ. Turns out I haven't posted for almost a year, how crazy is that? Guess I never really was sure what I was supposed to do with this thing.

So how's my year been? Not exactly outstanding, but it could have been worse. I'm still working at the same job, and living with my parents. I've given up wasting my time and money attempting to study university topics.

I don't have any great savings or possessions, a new love, or an exciting new career. If you just looked at the physical evidence, you might think that I had accomplished nothing in 2008, but I like to think there's more to it than that.

Over the last year I've learned more than ever before, I've worked hard and developed my technical skills - I look back shocked at some of the code I created in 2006/2007, I know better now; I've organized my living space, I've spent time with friends and family, I've dated, and I've read an enormous number of blog articles that have expanded my knowledge on a whole bunch of topics - with any luck, maybe I've even gotten a little bit wiser as a result.

In short, very little in my life is "new," but much is "improved". Here's hoping 2009 brings something really new and exciting; I'm feeling ready for it.

City of Stonnington

Today I just got a parking ticket for $110. This was for parking in a road-side parking bay outside a shop for a few minutes, a parking bay it turned out was no standing at certain times of the day, cause as we all know parking in parking bays at the wrong time of day can be a real safety hazard >.< It seems parking fines in Stonnington are big business, to the tune of $10 million dollars per year, they even have a handy ".com.au" website to steal your money in the comfort of your own home. I've also come across several reports that they'll even try and fine people who haven't managed to break a rule, by incorrectly assessing the time spent in a spot.

There's nothing I can directly do about this, the new 1999 road safety rules got rid of any clause requiring parking restrictions to be in any way justified or reasonable, and the 2006 Parking infringement act allows them to take away my license and put me in jail if I don't pay.

Thus, I've made the decision in future not to drive to any suburbs in the Stonnington area - Armadale, Glen Iris, Kooyong, Malvern, Malvern East, Prahran, South Yarra, Toorak and Windsor. If I really need to go to any of these places, I'll take public transport, but more often than not I'll just find somewhere else to shop. If you drive yourself and don't feel like getting ripped off, I'd strongly recommend you do the same.

Yeah, I'm just one guy, but I did used to shop a fair bit at Malvern, and I'd like to think taking my business elsewhere will cost them at least a little more than $110 in council rates over the next few years.

P.S. A side note for you I found while reading the Road rules - if you walk more than 3 meters away from your unoccupied car without locking it, you're violating a road rule and they can fine you "2 penalty points", which I believe is up to $200. Just another way we're being protected, or something.

Touching article about the meaning of life from Mac programmer Mike Lee. I wholeheartedly agree.

As if a gene could ever hope. Genes do not hope, nor can they feel any other kind of emotion. That’s something only I can do. I live to love my wife, my family, and my friends. I live for music, for art, for food. We, as humans, have discovered a way to beat the system. We’ve discovered a way to not simply live life, but to revel in the joy of living. In short, we’ve given life meaning by defining it to mean itself, and we’ve given it purpose by learning, teaching, and creating.

Wow, LJ looks different now. Anyway figured I'd have another try at inducing some comas amongst anyone that reads this thing, by blogging some of the vagueities of my life, and of course my opinions of questionable worth. I'll start by reviewing games, because god knows there isn't enough of that on teh interweb.

Recently finished playing Shadow the Hedgehog and Okami. Shadow really is an impressive game as the Sonic series goes, so much detail for a platformer, with hedgehogs, aliens, eggman and the president fighting it off against each other, even playing through 10 times to get access to the final ending it feels like I've just scratched the surface. Guns were a good addition and done really nicely too, it's easy to screw up the gameplay when you splice two genres like that, but they've managed to strike a neat balance with it.

Okami was simple enough, but was definitely a decent Zelda rip-off, with a cel-shading engine that puts Wind Waker to shame - it's hard to find words to express how delightfully weird it feels to play an entire game represented as an Ukiyo-e painting. The brush-technique made a pleasant replacement to the endless inventory shuffling of the Zelda series, although the pattern-recognition algorithm was decidedly average, but it never became a major problem thanks to the game simply ignoring any techniques that you haven't learned yet, unlike a certain other game.

Started watching the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood this weekend, uncommonly, it's a hybrid police drama and sci-fi and it just works. A lot darker than Doctor Who and well worth the watch.

As far as my personal life goes, work is good but I'm getting lonely at home - I want another boyfriend dammit >.<

Nero Burning Rom 7 released, 103 megs!!!

I just realised I hadn't installed Nero since my HDD failure, so I went and searced Google, and found out version 7 was now out. OK, I thought, let's try it out, it'll probably be harder to use than 6, but it might just have more of those essential features like dual layer support and so on. So I clicked download, then looked at the window to see how long it would take to download. Then I looked again in disbelief, because the installer for Nero 7 is 103MB!! What on earth have they put in there?

Amusingly the site I downloaded it from, afterburner.com, stated "Nero combines huge amounts of features in a compact and easy to use package." According to the Nero site, a full install uncompresses to a whopping 288MB. Is 288MB what passes as "compact" for a god damn DVD burner software nowadays?

I wish I made backups

Don't buy a Hitachi hard drive, they suck. Don't buy an NEC dvd writer to back up your Hitachi drive either, they also suck (don't even get me started on Maxtor). In essence, I really wish I'd made more backups, or that my hard drive hadn't died. Goodbye emails and passwords, and so long photos and documents, it's been a fun ride.
